Transforming living moments into music – Gayageum artist, Seo Jung-Min.
Jungmin Seo is a 25-string Gayageum musician-cum-artist. She has been working towards blurring the boundaries between traditional and contemporary music by documenting special moments in our day to day lives into music with the 25-string Gayageum.
She was a member of a Korean traditional music duo – [su:m] in the past 9 years. Seeing the world as her stage, she performed globally at South by Southwest Music Festival (US), World Music Expo (WOMEX UK), World Music and Dance Festival (WOMAD) in Australia and New Zealand.
In 2016, Seo released her first solo album < COSMOS 25 > along with < Cosmos 25: 25-string Gayageum Score Collection 1 > featuring the scores of the main title songs in her first album. This album perfectly showcased the passion of a 25-string Gayageum musician and performer in discovering the art and technique of performance, which earned its nomination in the “Excellent Crossover Album” category at the 2017 Korean Music Awards and “World Music Album” entry at the 60th Grammy Awards. Moreover, Seo has also held her showcases at Seoul Music Week and APaMM (Asia Pacific Music Meeting), PAMS 2019 (Performing Arts Market in Seoul), and her concert < HOME > is selected as a ‘Repertoire of the Year’ by the Arts Council Korea.
서정민은 25현 가야금 창작자이자 연주자이다.
우리가 살아가는 일상의 기록 속에서 특별한 순간들을 음악으로 만들고 25현 가야금을 통해서 전통과 현대의 경계를 넘나드는 작업을 꾸준히 이어오고 있다.
지난 9년간 국악 듀오 숨[suːm]의 멤버로, 미국 SXSW, WOMEX, 호주 WOMAD, 뉴질랜드 WOMAD 등 세계를 무대로 다양한 공연을 펼쳤다. 2016년 서정민 첫 솔로 앨범 < COSMOS 25 >와 앨범 수록곡의 주요 곡을 악보로 정리한 25현 가야금 작품집 < COSMOS 25 >를 동시 발매했다.
25현 가야금 연주자이자 창작자로 꾸준히 연구한 주법과 테크닉이 유감없이 발휘된 앨범은 2017 한국대중음악상 최우수 크로스오버 음반 부문에 노미네이트 되었으며, 60회 The Grammy Award ‘World Music Album’ Entry 선정되었다. 또한 한국 Seoul Music Week, 아시아퍼시픽뮤직미팅(APaMM)의 공식 쇼케이스에 선정되었고, 서정민 콘서트 < HOME >은 2019 서울아트마켓 PAMS CHOICE, 한국문화예술위원회 ‘올해의 레퍼토리’로 선정된 바 있다.
